GAGE Essay Prompts Spring 2013
Elementary Summer Scholarship Award - $100
In Alice in Wonderland, Alice falls down the rabbit hole and her dress poofs up like a parachute. She says, “After this, I should think nothing of falling down the stairs.”
Many people fear many things. Oftentimes, something that frightened you or caused you stress turns out to not be so bad when you finally face it. Can you think of a time when you had to do something you feared and were surprised that is wasn’t as bad as you thought? Tell about a time you faced a fear- whether physical or scholastic, and how the experience helped your courage for the next task.
(Submit typed essays, 300 words or less, no more than two per school.)
Deadline for submission is April 3, 2013.

Each student has been assigned a WWII leader. They should be researching their leader.  They will then use their research to write a biography from the point of view of the leader.  For example, their paper will start with, "I am..."  Homework for Wednesday and Thursday is to gather research on their leader.

Awesome Short Film

I showed this short film to the class today.  It has lots of great messages.  On the surface it teaches the kids that everyone has a story in their head, a narrative.  Unfortunately, the older the kids get the further down those narratives get pushed in their brains.  We need to keep their story telling abilities alive and well!  The ending of the film is the most important part.  We are coming into "testing season" with the 5th grade writing test on March 6th and the CRCT in April.  Many kids, especially the brightest, are scared.  They put a great deal of pressure on themselves to do well.  The message at the end is that "The scared is scared of the things you like."  Think about things you like and the scared feeling will leave your mind.  So now through the "testing season" our motto will be, "the scared is scared."
Enjoy!

Science Fair Club

Please stop by the media center for your board.  They look wonderful, but it's time to share the space with other classes needing to display their work.  Thank you for all your hard work and allowing the school to share in your project!

It's conference time!

Be watching for information from the school regarding our new online conference sign up!  If your child has me for 5th Grade AC Reading and ELA, then you need to sign up for a conference with me, not the homeroom teacher.  If you conferenced with me in the fall, then you will conference with me again now.  Please only sign up for one conference with me, not for both of us. Thank you so much.  I'm looking forward to seeing all of you!
